{"id":6319,"date":"2019-01-24T09:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T09:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aroraengineers.com\/?p=6319"},"modified":"2025-04-30T19:45:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T19:45:13","slug":"2019-future-city-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aroraengineers.com\/2019-future-city-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Students Design the Resilient Cities of the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arora was very proud to once again sponsor the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.futurecityphilly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Regional Future City Competition<\/a> held on January 19, 2019.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futurecity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Future City<\/a>\u00a0is a national, STEM-based learning competition in which 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students\u00a0team up to envision, design, and build a city that exists at least 100 years in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the competition addresses a current sustainability issue. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cPowering Our Future,\u201d challenged participants to design a resilient power grid for a future city that can withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The competition includes several phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The design of a virtual city using SimCity software<\/li>\n<li>A narrative that describes the unique aspects of their city<\/li>\n<li>A city model, which students build to scale from recycled materials<\/li>\n<li>A 7-minute presentation that allows each team to highlight what makes their city special<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thank you to Arora&#8217;s Allan Stock, AIA, Edward Hart, RCDD, and\u00a0Siuma Montero Carranza, who volunteered their time throughout different phases of the competition. Congratulations to Downingtown Middle School, the first-place winner in this year\u2019s competition, and to St. Aloysius Academy, the winner of Arora&#8217;s \u201cRethinking Infrastructure to Power the Future\u201d award.
