The regional competition brought together 44 student teams, more than 300 students, and over 100 volunteers, creating an energetic and collaborative environment where students presented their city models and shared the research and ideas behind their designs. Whether participating as part of classroom instruction or dedicating time outside of school hours, students worked together to explore emerging technologies and develop thoughtful solutions to complex urban challenges.

Many of the student concepts emphasized sustainable design strategies, efficient land use, renewable energy, and access to green space, reflecting a holistic view of how future cities can support both environmental responsibility and quality of life. The level of creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking on display highlighted the dedication of the students, as well as the teachers and mentors who guided them throughout the process.

As part of its sponsorship, our team presented the “Arora Innovation Award”, recognizing a student team for creative thinking and innovative approaches to solving complex urban challenges.

Helping Set the Stage for Community Connection

Our volunteers spent the day helping DCH staff prepare the workshop space for the fundraiser, setting up workstations, organizing materials, and creating a warm, festive environment for participants. This behind-the-scenes work plays an important role in helping DCH raise funds for their programs that make a meaningful difference across the region.

DCH’s mission reaches far beyond horticulture. Their programs connect people to nature through urban farms, tree plantings, and public landscapes that improve community health, expand green space in low-canopy neighborhoods, and create more welcoming environments. They also support individuals overcoming significant life challenges through initiatives like Branches to Chances®, which provides hands-on job training and pathways to long-term employment in the green industry, all while helping bring fresh, locally grown produce to underserved neighborhoods.

Volunteering at Future City allowed us to share our knowledge and experience while also learning from the fresh perspectives of the students. It was a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community and support the next generation of engineers. We were proud to see the students’ hard work pay off as they presented their cities to the judges with confidence and enthusiasm. The students came up with some truly impressive solutions to real-world issues, and their passion for engineering was evident in every aspect of their projects.

Allan Stock, AIA, Sr. Project Manager has volunteered with Future city for an impressive 10 years! He stated, “Volunteering for this competition has been an incredible experience. It’s inspiring to see young minds come together and develop innovative solutions for the cities of tomorrow.”

Donna Guzewski, PE, LEED Green Associate has volunteered with Future City for 8 years. She stated, “Being part of this initiative allows me to mentor the next generation of engineers. Seeing them apply their creativity and skills to shape the future of urban development is truly rewarding.”
